It’s coming! The Christmas season is coming!
A benefit of living in such a large and spread out city is that there are a ton of events happening for families around the holidays! Whether you want adventures in the mountains, bright city lights downtown, or something more low key in the country, there is truly something for everyone!
Need a few ideas? I’m here to help you celebrate my favourite time of the year! Here are 10 things to do with your family in Vancouver this Christmas!
Bright Nights at Stanley Park is always a highlight of the Christmas season for our family! It’s one of the few times a year we make the trek from our home in the Valley to Downtown Vancouver. Parking is free, entering the light display at the Train Plaza is by donation and tickets to the Bright Nights Train ride range from $9-12 per person. Kids 2 and under are free. Much of the funds raised go towards the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.
2. Heritage Christmas at Burnaby Village Museum
I’m a huge history lover, so visiting a Heritage Christmas at Burnaby Village Museum is right at the top of my list every year! Stroll through the village enjoying the lights and looks of Christmas! Get a photo with Father Christmas, chat with street characters and listen to musicians. Do some baking in the old farmhouse and participate in a Christmas craft! It’s fun for the whole family and admission is FREE! You’ll want to make sure you bring a few dollars for a ride on the old carousel ($2.55 per person.) Heritage Christmas starts November 19th and is on through January 2nd!
Can’t afford a trip to Europe this December? The Vancouver Christmas Market is the next best way to experience a Bavarian Christmas and it’s all happening at the Jack Poole Plaza – a brand new and expanded location! You’ll have the opportunity to shop for unique and hand crafted gifts, enjoy various flavors of both the sweet and savory variety and take in all kinds of entertainment! The Vancouver Christmas Market is on from November 26th through December 31st.
4. Country Christmas at Timberline Ranch
Want to experience a low key, family style Christmas? Head out to Timberline Ranch for a Country Christmas , happening December 1-20th! Your kids will have the opportunity to decorate cookies, ride ponies, visit a petting zoo, take pictures in a photo booth and so much more! Sometimes the best kind of Christmas is a simple Christmas! 5. Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge
Canyon Lights returns for it’s 11th season at Capilano Suspension Bridge! Enjoy the truly magical display of holiday lights while you experience the heights of the suspension bridge, Cliffwalk and Treetops Adventure. Decorate gingerbread cookies, listen to the live band and make your own Christmas cards in the Winter Pavilion. Don’t leave without taking in the beauty of the world’s tallest Christmas tree standing at 153 feet high! Canyon lights runs from November 24th til January 8th.
6. The Peak of Christmas at Grouse Mountain
What’s more Christmasy then a snow covered mountain? Experience The Peak of Christmas on Grouse Mountain, where you can do a little ice skating, take a romantic sleigh ride, meet Santa in his workshop and visit the reindeer! Enjoy classic Christmas movies in the Theatre in the Sky and join the choirs in some holiday tunes at the Peak Chalet. This is one of the most popular events in Vancouver around the holidays and it’s all included in a regular admission ticket to the Mountain! The Peak of Christmas runs from November 25th until the 2nd of January.
Looking for a place to find the perfect live Christmas tree? Head out to Aldor Acres Family Farm to cut down your own tree or purchase a pre-cut one from the yard. After you’ve found the perfect tree, snuggle up around the campfire and enjoy roasted marshmallows and hot chocolate! The barn is also open for a visit with the animals! Admission is $5.00 per person and tree’s start at $7.00 a foot. Christmas at Aldor Acres is open from November 26th until December 23rd.
Happening December 1st through the 31st, take a ride up on the Sea to Sky Gondola and experience all kinds of magic! You can enjoy a pancake breakfast with Santa Claus, watch choral performances, or get warm and cozy for story time with hot chocolate and cookies! Events are changing all month long, so be sure to check out the calendar to see what appeals to you most!
Coming November 24th to the Vancouver Aquarium, experience Scuba Claus as he dives into the Strait of Georgia exhibit and visits the Beluga Whales in Canada’s Arctic Gallery! Take in the glow of the Jelly Swarm, where dozens of origami jellies dangle from the ceiling, and stop to marvel at the towering Christmas tree made entirely out of marine debris! Finish off your visit with a viewing of the 4-D movie, the Polar Express, which will take you on a magical ride full of sights, sounds, smells and more! Christmas at the Vancouver Aquarium will run through January 2nd.
10. Christmas at FlyOver® Canada
Ever wonder how it feels to fly? This Christmas you can join Santa on a simulated flight across Canada before heading off to the North Pole thanks to FlyOver Canada! Guests will have a blast helping Santa Claus search for his missing elves during an exhilarating flight across Canada and on to the North Pole. This trip engages all the senses as you are suspended up in the air! There is a height requirement to participate, so visit the site for more information on ride restrictions. Christmas at FlyOver Canada is happening from November 24th to January 2nd.
