Towards the end of 2017, I felt like I was in a bit of a funk with blogging. This industry changes a lot and I was feeling a push to be someone I wasn’t in order to succeed. I decided that I was willing to work hard and improve my skills, but I wasn’t willing to fake who I was or how I did things. I never got into blogging for the money and free stuff – I just wanted to create and connect!
Instead of focusing on what everyone else was doing, I reflected back on all the coolest experiences that have come from blogging for me. I decided to simply be grateful for each and every opportunity I’ve had and the ones that continue to arrive in my inbox. The fact that anyone wanted to work with a simple stay-at-home-Mom like me is kind of mind blowing. Looking back on some of these highlights reminds me of how blessed I truly have been.
The Coolest Experiences That Have Come From Blogging
Blogging has been around for a long time now, but it’s still a mystery to those who don’t do it. It’s not as easy as it looks and it’s fiercely competitive. You write, you plan, you pitch, and sometimes you fail. One month you could make a ton of money, and the next you might make nothing. In the end, we’re just like any other person trying to make an income doing something we love, and there’s no shame in that.
The first cool experience that comes to mind was being contracted as a Sunwing Kidcations Travel Expert. I’ll never forget sitting in my rocking chair with my then 6 month old daughter, and getting a phone call from a friend in the social media industry. She asked if I’d be available to fly with my kids to The Bahamas the following week. I said yes, had an incredible time, and went on to join their official team of traveling bloggers. It was an honor to be working among woman I looked up to in the industry.
If you told me that I’d one day be invited on a Disney media trip, I’d have never believed you. Towards the end of 2016, I got that call. I flew to California for a weekend of Disneyland Holiday celebrations, eating at all the best restaurants and staying in one of my bucket list hotels – Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Better yet, I was there with friends! It was a dream come true for me and I’m so grateful for that opportunity.
Speaking of Disney, blogging has also landed me on the Disney Social Media Moms invite list for the past three years. Although we paid for these trips, it was deeply discounted and included so many amazing experiences, like being in the Walt Disney World Parks when they were closed and getting previews of Disney films and shows before they were seen by anyone else. I’ll never forget riding Expedition Everest in the dark with my girlfriends! Being as nuts about Disney as I am, these have been some amazing highlights!
Working as a Broadway Across Canada reviewer has been special for me, too. When I was a little girl, I dreamed of gracing the stage in a full scale production like these. My life took a very different path, but I continue to enjoy them as a spectator in the audience. I cried in Phantom of the Opera as a chandelier fell from the roof directly above my head. My mouth hung open in awe when the animals paraded through the aisles at Disney’s The Lion King. And I laughed hysterically with my husband seeing the antics Blue Man Group. Broadway Across Canada is one of the few things that will get me to trade my quiet home away from the city for the traffic and busyness of downtown Vancouver.
I’m currently on my third year of being a Pampers Ambassador! Over the years, this brand has switched PR firms and campaign managers, and somehow, I’ve remained on their list. They even flew me to Toronto last year just to meet with them and attend a breakfast presentation! This company truly cares about their products and the message their sending, and I’m really proud to be a part of that.
But the coolest experiences that have come from blogging has got to be the real friendships I’ve made. I could fly across Canada and the USA and find a friend to hug. I can call them for support or to bounce ideas off of. These people truly love me, and they get what I’m doing.
It’s also allowed me to connect with you! I will never understand how my little space on the internet managed to catch your attention, but I’m glad it did. Thank you for every single LIKE, COMMENT, and PAGE VIEWS. You gave me a community and made this big world feel a little smaller and connected. You help me keep my sanity and laugh along with me on this journey. Thank you for that!
Thank you to every single brand, campaign manager, and PR person who has seen value in what I offer. I do not have the biggest numbers or the most amazing pictures, but I love to create and share authentic stories and images. The fact that you recognize the importance of Moms like me speaks volumes in this industry full of perfection and Photoshop.
Sending you all so much love!
